Chakra Tracklist | Human EP by Dodie

Hello, humans. (Haha, get it?)

One of my favorite past-times is matching music with astrological and/or spiritual themes.
Welcome to CHAKRA TRACKLIST - a metaphysical, musical review.

Chakras are energy points in the body, according to many Eastern practices. There are seven main chakras, each inhabiting and influencing a different part of the body.

The following is an energetic and thematic list based on what resonates for me.
It was actually quite difficult to place because overall, this EP felt like solar plexus, heart, and throat - identity crises that occur because of complicated communication and relationships. "Human" is definitely a fitting name!

Let me know what you think. I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!

Shout-out to the beautiful Sun-in-Aries Dodie, whose creative online presence has inspired me endlessly. Check out her new EP, Human, and show her some Love.

1. "Arms Unfolding" - HEART

This beautiful intro is all about trying to fall in love with someone again (most likely, yourself - at least that's how it feels for me) and being emotionally vulnerable.
Our Heart is our energetic and emotional center, and so this song is the perfect descriptor of breaking down walls, shedding layers, and opening up to New Love, wherever that may come from - within or externally.

Additionally, this is the song that she hid in several of her YouTube videos leading up to the release! What a creative, sneaky way to express the heart's most confusing bits. WE LOVE!

2. "Monster" - SACRAL

Relationships are messy, especially when we're trying to create new ones right after losing old ones.
To me, this song depicts the monstrosities of human existence, which seems like a delightful paradox, and the mundane condition of dating.
Located in our lower stomach and lower back, the sacral chakra is where we create anything and everything - projects, ideas, beliefs, relationships, and even babies!
This song is definitely one of Dodie's strangest and yet most charming creations, and it displays a whole range of raw human and monster emotion for us to relate to.

3. "Not What I Meant" (feat. Lewis Watson) - THROAT

Another main theme of this album is Dodie's conflict between desiring fame and wanting to hide. Being a popular online creator and musician is a huge responsibility, and it weighs on her. In this way, the song feels a lot like a confession, something that comes from the expressive powers of the throat chakra. 'Nough said.

4. "Human" (feat. Tom Walker) - ROOT

Not only is this the name of the album, it's also the album's foundation for storytelling and expressing. Our flawed human perspectives, warped by highly sensitive experience and subjective thought, reveal how strangely similar we all are. At the roots, we're connected! Our origin itself is embarrassing and quirky.
In being human, we aren't bad, but we aren't even close to perfect. This song reveals the pros and cons to being a little too obsessed with someone and how doing so can paradoxically make us forget our humanity while doing and saying things that are so human.

5. "She" - SOLAR PLEXUS

What better example of self-discovery than this gem? Dodie expresses her earliest memories of being bisexual here! It's a spectacular amalgam of identity exploration through loving someone else. The whole experience is bittersweet because while the love is technically unrequited, it could also be considered unconditional, because the subject of the song is so beloved - love goes beyond reason.
Located just above the belly button, the solar plexus chakra shows us who we truly are.

6. "If I'm Being Honest" - THIRD EYE

While this could definitely also be throat or solar plexus, I think third eye is a decent choice, because it represents foresight and hindsight. Intuition and contemplation.
In this song, Dodie explores an embarrassing prank that mean girls played on her during high school. Although she had a feeling they were just messing her, she still went with it because a crush was involved. It's a beautiful mix between self-pity and self-love, having the courage to go through embarrassment but also to step away from it with a clearer head and better intuition. Our third eyes show us the way, back and forth, before and after.
The most we can trust is ourselves.

7. "Burned Out" - CROWN

Despite all the positive attention and support, Dodie's mental health is (and should be) top priority. In this song, she further confesses her woes over being such a popular person online, and warns young fans not to mistake her for a "cartoon." This really drives home the idea that we're all human, even the people you see on a screen.
I chose crown chakra for this one because it's our connection to God/Source, something that (and if Dodie ever reads this, I'm sure she'll roll her eyes and scoff) I believe is sometimes blocked for her.
In times of depression or dissociation, we feel isolated and basically nonexistent. But in admitting that we feel this way, we actually begin to open and amplify our connections to other people and endless possible human experiences.
From what I can tell, Dodie's not a very spiritual person, but her music is its own spiritual language. Just by creating and writing, she enhances her connection with other humans and the Divine - whether she knows it or not. And that's pretty freaking cool.

So, thank you, Dodie. I know it's hard, but it means the universe to fellow empathic creators like me that you're doing what you love against all odds. Instead of letting your mind take over, you busy it with creating, channeling that wild energy back into the earth where it belongs. That way, we can enjoy it and relate to you too. You're not alone, friend!
If you are reading this (and hopefully you haven't laughed me out of the metaphorical room yet) then just know we appreciate you simply for being human.
Inspiration doesn't come from gods and goddesses - it comes from fellow Spirits in bodies just searching for a way to survive and thrive.

And to you, reader, THANK YOU. You are a light of Love and piece of Peace.
